How to Start A Home-Based Bookkeeping Business

If you are good with numbers, and highly organized, a bookkeeping may be the ideal business for you.
  • To get started, you will need a proven method or system that allows you to track client records. Most bookkeepers these days use specialized software programs.
  • You will need to determine how much you will charge, as well as how you will charge. Will you charge hourly, or by the entry? Check with other local bookkeepers to find out what and how they charge. This will give you a good idea of what your numbers should be.
  • Also, you need to decide how payments will be made. Requiring a deposit to cover the estimated costs of the first quarter is probably a good idea for new accounts. This way you know you will at least be paid for the first three months of service.
  • Once you have the basics of the business set-up, you will need to locate clients. This can be done in several ways, such as classifieds, radio and TV ads, etc., or, by taking a more proactive approach, start contacting local businesses in your area by phone or in person to offer your services.
  • A great time to do this is just after tax season because small businesses are well aware of how important keeping records is at that time. They may feel that they would rather pay someone else to do all of the time consuming work required to do this.
  • Networking is also a great way to get new business and plenty of referrals. Start contacting anyone you know that may need your services or may know someone that does.
